Success Stories from Zindagi Now Graduates
Durrani
Durrani, a recent graduate of Zindagi Now, represents the resilience and potential of Afghan women even under the most oppressive conditions. Born and raised in Jalalabad, Eastern Afghanistan, Durrani grew up in a community where women’s education and employment have been severely restricted. Despite the risks, Durrani joined Zindagi Now seeking an opportunity to learn, grow, and create a better future. Through the programme, she received hands-on training in design, jewellery making and gem cutting while also participating in a safe and inclusive space that connected women from diverse ethnic and social backgrounds. For the first time, she felt seen, heard, and supported. Upon graduating, Durrani made a bold decision: to open her own production studio and training centre for women in Jalalabad. Her centre now serves as both a creative business and a skills hub—offering jewellery training and production services, and safe employment opportunities to dozens of young women in her city.
Aishwa and Marwa
Aishwa and Marwa, two sisters from Badakhshan, joined Zindagi Now to develop their jewelry-making, gemstone processing, and business skills. After completing the program, they returned to Badakhshan and established their own lapis lazuli jewelry and bead-making business.Today, their enterprise provides employment opportunities for more than 30 women and serves local and international markets. In addition to running a successful business, Aishwa and Marwa now lead and coordinate Zindagi Now's programs in Badakhshan, helping other women gain the skills and opportunities needed to build sustainable livelihoods. Their story demonstrates the transformative power of skills development, entrepreneurship, and local leadership
Sahar
Sahar’s story is one of courage and determination. Growing up in a traditional Afghan family where women were not allowed to work or even go outside freely, Sahar faced immense challenges. After pulling out of school in 2021, she found herself with limited options. However, thanks to the skills and confidence she gained through the Zindagi Now programme, Sahar has transformed her life. Today, she runs a small production space, not only supporting her family financially but also providing sustainable employment to other women from her community. Her business stands as a beacon of hope, proving that with the right support, women can break social barriers and build a better future.
Zuhra
Zuhra graduated from Zindagi Now in 2022 and quickly became a pillar of strength within her family and community. Taking charge of our training venue, she now plays a vital role in empowering other women by sharing her skills and knowledge. Beyond her leadership role, Zuhra supports her family and is dedicated to ensuring her younger brother continues his education. Her journey highlights the ripple effect of empowering one woman — it can uplift entire families and communities.
Maryam
Maryam: Crafting Connections in Kabul’s Famous Chicken Street. Maryam’s dedication and creativity have allowed her to establish strong links with the bustling shops of Kabul’s famous Chicken Street. She produces a variety of chains in different sizes tailored for local retailers, helping keep the traditional jewellery market vibrant. Through her work, Maryam supports her community by providing quality craftsmanship while preserving Afghanistan’s rich jewellery heritage.
